Gaining Wisdom
Wisdom eludes me. The more I learn, the less I think I know. Maybe it's because when I learn something new I realize how much more there is to know. And by that I mean, how much we can know, not how much we must know. It's perpetual. I strive to learn more, but sometimes I feel I don't know enough. Wait a minute, wisdom isn't just knowledge! It isn't how many books you've read or how many degrees you have. Wisdom can't be learned just by reading, it must be gained as well. Wisdom collects, and is gained from experience and consideration. No matter how much you try, you won't become wise just learning stuff. Wisdom is found in the application of knowledge, the awareness that comes from the analysis of our world and life, through learning and experiencing. Think deeper. When you toss a stone into a pond you are immediately aware of the ripples and the splash, but it doesn't stop there. Even though your mind forgets the stone because it's gone from sight, the stone continues its journey to the bottom of the pond. We can think about the stuff we can't see. When we're seeking knowledge we shouldn't skim the surface and ignore the lessons within the lessons. The deeper considerations are where wisdom hides. Things we learn on one subject may intersect with points of another subject, we need to examine those connections. Even if the connections are not obvious at first, once made, the proverbial light bulb goes on and we're one step closer. Gain: Increasing the level by increasing the amplitude. Depth. More than a little. Wisdom is gained. It's about what lies beyond the zero point in a wavelength. It's looking toward the outside, while looking in. Often when going through a difficult time, some think about making a major change, a change of a job or residence. Will this really help? Of course if you are being abused or harassed, such action may be in order. But for the most part, if we change nothing about ourselves, we merely take what is inside of us wherever we wander. Your Biggest Do it Yourself Project When I meet people and tell them what I do, I often hear, "Oh, you are a motivational speaker," with some amount of assuredness in their voice. While I realize there are many speakers that people lump into this category (some who are my friends and mentors), I strongly disagree with that label. ADHD - Its a Wonderful Life As I usually do over the Holidays, I watched one of my all-time favorite actors in one of my all time favorite movies and that's Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life". Co-starring Donna Reed and made in the 1940s, the movie was not critically acclaimed at the time, but over the years has become a stable of the Holiday Season. If you have not seen it, you need to, and if you have, then you all know it revolves around a small town businessman George Bailey from Bedford Falls, New York, who, as he grows up, has all of these dreams of doing wonderful things with his life, and hopes of traveling to all the farthest points in the world. His plans are constantly interrupted by world events and family circumstances, which include the death of his father, the great depression, and World War II. George's father and his Uncle Billy years earlier had started the Baileys Brothers Building and Loan to help the less fortunate people of Bedford Falls obtain the great American Dream of home ownership. Their only alternative is high rent or exorbitant interest rates to the local scrooge Mr. Potter. Uncle Billy is a classic ADHD type individual. An Irishmen, like me, who apparently has never been married, has a pet crow he carries around with him, and a pet squirrel at home. He is constantly worrying and has little self esteem.
