Questions for the Game of Life
"If you could eliminate one day from your past so that you never had to live through it, what day would you erase?" "If you could ask a single question of a dead relative, what would it be and of whom would you ask it?" ----- These questions come from a little book I've been reading as a way to begin the New Year. If. . . Questions for the Game of Life by Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell (Villard, 1995) My partner and I have been playing it, throwing out questions and sharing responses. Some questions are easy and fun: "If you had the chance to make any one purchase that you passed up in your lifetime, what would it be?" (Ah, no contest! The set of antique china we found on the Oregon coast some 8 years ago but were too timid to buy." Others are a challenge: "If you could choose the very last thing you will see before death, what would it be?" (That took some reflection, but, although I'm not a gardener, what I think I'd most want to see is perfect, full-blown rose.) Still others plunge us into an intimacy we may or may not have considered: "What is the one thing from your past about which you feel the most guilty?" (OK, so I'm chicken I pass!) It's a fun game, and a good relationship-builder. And yet I wonder: what happens if I go a step farther, take the initiative of shaping the questions I need to hear. IF . . . I want to make this year the best one of my life, what one attitude will I change, starting right now? IF . . . I truly believe that hope is possible and love is real, how will I let it show? IF . . . I want to live so that my values show, what one thing will I do TODAY? Your questions may be different from mine, and your answers surely will. But that's the beauty of the "Game of Life". There are as many questions as you need. The president of a large North Eastern company, doing business internationally, was visiting his California division. While he was there, he saw a very large photograph of, of all people, himself, hanging on the wall. Keep the Channel Open Why do you do what you do? What is your real work in the world, and why is it important to know the answer? Under The Guise of Care and Concern These words came up powerfully for me these past few months. I have had the experience this year of being in several situations in which people's genuineness and motives came into question over and over again. Have you ever met the type I am referring to? People who are correcting you because they care? People who are sharing with you for your own good and growth? People who show you every mistake and dark nook and cranny of your soul because they want to see you live a life of freedom, prosperity and possibilities? Elements of Change The key to achieving more than you currently are, no matter which area of your life or work you are focusing in on now, is change. The old saying rings true: If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you've already got. If you keep eating and exercising the way you currently are, you will weigh the same a year from now. If you continue to sell to the same people on the same schedule, you will make the same amount of money next year. They sparkle and shine when the sun comes out, but when the darkness sets in, their beauty is revealed only if there is light on from within." Hello! It Is Opportunity Calling! The First Step Today is an anniversary of sorts for me. Three years ago today, I publicly launched Tomorrow's Edge after years of getting ready, talking about how I was someday going to do it, and researching everything but advertising! It was a huge first step in the middle of a bunch of first steps that I had taken up to that point. Naturally, it fell flat on it's face because of my lack of education in the marketing area. So, here I am three years later, better educated, dusted off, boot straps pulled up, repeating that first step. I take a deep breath, psyche myself up, wiggle my toes a bit, bend my knee, lift my foot, and sit back down with another cup of coffee. Letting Go Of Our Negativity Everyone has something, whether it be a habit, or aspect of their personality, that they wish that they did not have. For me, that something is fear. I am constantly afraid of just about anything you could name...car crashes, meeting new people, tornados, driving in the dark, sleeping with the closet open, public speaking...you name it, I'm probably afraid of it! This is a negative habit, and certainly one I would like to change. Most people can name at least one similar habit or personality trait off the top of their head. Think about it for a moment. What part of yourself would you truly like to be rid of? Now take that part of you, and imagine it disappearing forever. If you want, you can even make it more physical and real by writing that trait down on a piece of paper, then burying it or destroying it. Hello Creative Entrepreneurs! The Lies We Live By How many times have you lied to get your way? Knowledge Or Action It's been said that knowledge is power. While that's true to an extent, it isn't the whole truth. Knowledge without action is almost useless. It doesn't help to be a genius if you never do anything with the knowledge. I tend to think of knowledge as ammunition and action as a gun. (It's a typical guy thought, I know but it works for me.) Think about it. If you have bullets and no gun, they're pretty much useless. If you have a gun and no bullets, the best you can do is throw (action) the gun at the target. Not as useless as the bullets (knowledge) since action without knowledge is more productive than knowledge without action Motivation From A Great Western - We All Have It Coming Most self-help gurus warn us against watching too much TV. Spending time with your much maligned TV set does have advantages, however. You are, for example, able to watch a great film like 'Unforgiven'. It has lessons which can motivate us and enlighten us.
